Tips from a Colorado Pet-Friendly Photographer | Because fur babies are family too!

Thinking about including your dog, cat, or other beloved pet in your next family photo session? You're not alone! As a Colorado family photographer, I get asked all the time how to bring pets into photos in a way that feels relaxed, fun, and beautiful.

Whether you're planning family photos with pets, an engagement session with your dog, or just want to know how to make your furry friend feel comfortable at a session, here are my top tips to help things go smoothly.

1. Choose a Pet-Friendly Location

Start with a location that’s comfortable and safe for your pet. Many families love outdoor family photos with pets at local parks or trails. I often recommend dog-friendly photo locations near Denver, Boulder, and Evergreen that give us room to move around without too many distractions.

Some of my favorite pet-friendly spots in Colorado include:

Let your photographer know in advance that you’d like a pet-friendly photo session in Colorado, and they’ll help you find the perfect spot.

2. Bring a Buddy

If you’re including your pet in only part of the session, having a helper come along makes all the difference. They can walk your pup during couple or solo shots, or keep your dog nearby but out of the frame when needed. This keeps the energy calm and stress-free for everyone.

3. Pack Treats and Toys

To get the best photos, bring your pet’s favorite toy, squeaker, or treats. Whether it's a ball, biscuit, or peanut butter snack, these can help grab their attention and reward them for doing a great job. This is especially helpful if you're wondering how to take family photos with pets who are extra wiggly or distracted.

To keep your furry friend happy and engaged during the shoot, treats and toys are a must. If you’re looking for something special and made with love, I highly recommend checking out Cosmos Dog Bakery. They’re a Colorado-based, family-owned bakery that crafts delicious, healthy dog treats using all-natural ingredients. Supporting local businesses here in Colorado!

4. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection in Your Family Photos with Pets

The beauty of family photography with dogs (or any pet) is in the real moments. I love capturing a dog nuzzling into their humans or a tail wag mid-run. It’s not about perfectly posed shots—posing with your pet for family pictures is more about play, laughter, and love.

5. Style your Family With Your Pet in Mind

What to Wear: Outfit Ideas for Family Photos with Pets

  • Stick to Neutrals or Earth Tones - Avoid super bright or neon colors that can reflect oddly on fur or skin.

  • Coordinate, Don’t Match -Think in color palettes instead of matching outfits. For example, your dog’s bandana can complement your child’s shirt or your partner’s jacket. This helps your session look styled without being overly “posed.”

  • Keep Pet Accessories Clean and Stylish -Bring a clean leash, collar, or harness in a neutral or muted color. If your dog wears a bandana or bow tie, choose one that goes with your overall color palette.

  • Avoid These:

    • Super light blues or whites that may blend into your pet’s fur (especially with golden or white dogs)

    • Distracting patterns like logos, bold stripes, or graphic tees

    • Super short dresses if we’ll be sitting or crouching with pets

Favorite Etsy Find: Embroidered Dog Accessories

One of my go-to Etsy shops creates hand-embroidered dog bandanas and outfits that are perfect for photo sessions. They’re soft, beautifully made, and photograph so well—especially with neutral or earthy tones.

6. Know Your Pet’s Limits

Some pets love the spotlight, others not so much. If your dog is reactive or your cat prefers staying close to home, your photographer will work with you to keep things comfortable. A quick photo on a blanket in your yard or a cozy cuddle shot on a trail is sometimes all it takes for meaningful images.

7. Tell Your Full Story with Family Photos That Include Pets

Your pet is part of your family’s story. Including them in your family photo session is a way to preserve the bond you share and make your photos truly personal. Years from now, these images will remind you of those walks, licks, snuggles, and goofy moments that made your house feel like home.

7. Grooming & Styling

Want your pup to look their best for your family photos? A quick grooming session can make a huge difference in how polished they look in photos (especially around the eyes and paws).

Need a groomer recommendation? My husband Gregorio works as a groomer at Petco in Arvada and would be happy to help your pet get photo-ready. Just let him know Colleen sent you!
