How to Prep for Your Mini Family Session: 5 Easy Tips for Fun, Stress-Free Photos!

Yay! You booked a mini family photo session!

A little prep goes a long way toward making your shoot feel totally relaxed, natural, and fun. Whether we are hanging out in a Denver park or exploring the gorgeous Colorado mountains, here are five super easy tips to help your family arrive feelin' great and camera-ready!

1. Try "The Jump Test" for Playful, Worry-Free Outfits

Kids love to run, twirl, and play during their photos... and honestly, that’s where all the magic happens! To make sure their outfits can keep up with their energy, try The Jump Test at home a couple of days before your session.

Have your kiddos pop on their full photo outfit and do a few big, crazy jumps in the living room!

  • What to check: Does a dress lift a little too high? Do pants slip down?

  • The easy fix: If a dress flies up when they move, just add a cute pair of bloomers, bike shorts, or cozy tights underneath!

Adding that quick extra layer means we can capture those classic candid moments (like Mom and Dad swinging their little one by the arms) without worrying about awkward outfit shifts. You get to keep both the polished family portraits and all the giggly, action-packed shots!

2. Don't Forget Photo-Ready Shoes!

It is so easy to spend all your energy matching shirts and dresses that shoes get left until the last minute. But guess what? Footwear shows up in almost all of your full-length shots!

Scuffed-up play shoes or bright neon sneakers can pull focus away from those happy smiles, so keep these quick tips in mind:

  • For the kids: Simple canvas sneakers, clean leather boots, or classic dress shoes work like a charm.

  • For parents: Pick comfortable, polished shoes that match your vibe and work well on grass or mountain trails.

  • Pro tip: Give everyone’s shoes a quick wipe-down and make sure they’re broken in so nobody’s dealing with grumpy feet mid-session!

3. Match (or Contrast!) Your Colors with the Location

Your surroundings play a huge role in how your final photo gallery feels! Choosing colors that complement the natural landscape makes your family pop effortlessly.

Here is how to match your color palette to the local scenery:

  • Fall Mountain Vibes (Golden Aspens & Mountain Views): Rich earth tones like mustard yellow, rust, deep navy, forest green, or warm cream look absolutely stunning against autumn foliage.

  • Spring & Summer Greens (Parks & Lush Fields): Soft neutrals, dusty blues, muted pinks, and warm tans balance out bright green grass beautifully.

  • Winter Snow & Red Rocks: Crisp ivories, charcoal, deep burgundy, and rich jewel tones look incredible against white snow or dramatic red rock formations.

Quick Styling Tip: Aim to coordinate rather than completely match! Pick a palette of 3 to 4 complementary colors for the whole family, mixing solids with subtle textures or soft patterns.

4. Bring Cute Jackets for Easy Layering

If you are taking photos in the Colorado mountains, you already know the weather can change in a snap! High-altitude breezes can sneak up fast, and chilly kids usually mean quick meltdowns.

Instead of throwing bulky ski coats over your carefully picked outfits at the last minute, make stylish outerwear part of your look from the start:

  • Bring photo-friendly layers like classic denim jackets, cozy cardigans, tailored coats, or leather jackets.

  • Neutral colors and fun textures (like chunky knits) add super cool depth and warmth to outdoor portraits.

  • If a chilly wind rolls through, we can just slip those layers on and keep the fun going without missing a beat!

5. Embrace the Chaos and Bring the Good Energy!

Mini sessions move fast, and they are designed to be lighthearted and lively. The absolute best thing you can do on photo day is let go of perfection, lean into the giggles, and focus on loving on your family.

When you come with comfortable outfits, warm layers, and a happy mindset, we’ll spend our entire time creating authentic, joyful memories you’ll love looking back on for years to come.
