Union Station in Denver is one of the most iconic and picturesque spots in the city. With its historic architecture, bustling energy, and nearby urban gems, it’s no wonder it’s a favorite location for photography sessions. Whether you’re planning engagement photos, senior portraits, a family session, or branding imagery, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your session at Union Station and its surrounding areas.
1. Timing is Everything
Union Station is a busy transportation hub, especially during weekday rush hours. For a more relaxed atmosphere and fewer people in the background, early mornings or golden hour (about an hour before sunset) are ideal. Weekends also tend to be quieter in the early morning. Planning your session during these times will help us capture beautiful, distraction-free shots.

2. Permit Requirements for Union Station
Photography at Union Station and some nearby areas like Wynkoop Plaza is generally allowed for personal sessions (like portraits or couples shoots), but commercial work or large setups may require a permit. As your photographer, I’ll help navigate this if needed, but it’s good to know that certain restrictions might apply—especially indoors or on RTD property.
3. No Flash Inside the Station
Union Station's interior is stunning with its tall ceilings, chandeliers, and elegant design. However, it’s important to note that flash photography is not allowed inside the building. Don’t worry—there’s still plenty of beautiful natural light to work with! I’ll use professional techniques and camera settings to ensure your photos look amazing, even without artificial lighting.
4. What to Wear
With its classic design and urban feel, Union Station pairs well with both elegant and casual outfits. Neutrals and solid colors tend to pop against the architecture without clashing with the details of the background. If we plan to walk to nearby spots like the Dairy Block or Millennium Bridge, consider comfortable shoes—though we can always swap them out for heels or dress shoes when it’s time to shoot!
5. Nearby Locations for Variety
One of the best things about this area is the variety of backdrops for your denver photoshoot within walking distance.
After we capture the charm of Union Station, we can stroll to:
Dairy Block – a modern alleyway filled with murals, string lights, and urban character.
Millennium Bridge – great for dramatic lines and a more contemporary feel.
Commons Park – just across the bridge, offering a touch of nature with city views in the background.
LoDo Streets – cobblestone roads and historic brick buildings provide even more texture to your session.

This variety means we can get a ton of different looks in one session without needing to drive anywhere.
6. Crowds and Privacy
Union Station is open to the public, so while we can find quieter spots, it’s not a completely private location for your photoshoot. If you’re nervous about onlookers or need a more intimate setting, we can balance Union Station with quieter adjacent areas or plan part of the session elsewhere.
7. Colorado Weather Considerations
Colorado weather can be unpredictable—sunshine one moment, a quick shower the next. It’s always a good idea to check the forecast and dress in layers. If rain is in the forecast, don’t worry—we can get creative with covered spots, reflections, and umbrellas for a moody, romantic vibe.
Tips for a Romantic Experience
Bring an Umbrella: A stylish umbrella can add to the romantic ambiance and keep you dry.
Dress Comfortably: Wear layers to stay comfortable in changing weather conditions.
Capture the Moment: Enjoy the colorado weather and add it to the moment!
8. Logistics and Parking
There’s metered street parking around Union Station and several nearby garages. Give yourself a few extra minutes to find parking and meet at our agreed-upon spot. I’ll always send a reminder with parking tips before your session!
