Candid Denver Family Photos | Exploring the Street Art of the RiNo District

When parents ask me for location recommendations for their Colorado family photos, they often expect me to point them toward the mountains or a grassy park. And while I love our foothills, there is something absolutely unmatched about the energy, color, and raw creativity of the RiNo Art District (River North).
Recently, I got to explore these alleyways with an incredible family and their two boys. If you’ve ever tried to get two young brothers to sit still, smile perfectly, and look at the camera all at the same time, you know it can feel like a sport.
That is exactly why we chose RiNo. Instead of a stiff, traditional photo shoot, we turned the afternoon into a total experience, a fun urban exploration where the kids could just be kids, and I could capture the real, unscripted moments as they unfolded.
Why RiNo is the Ultimate Family Photo Experience
RiNo isn’t just a location; it’s an interactive canvas. The walls are constantly changing, covered in world-class graffiti and murals painted by talented local artists. For two young boys, it felt like walking through a giant, open-air comic book.
Instead of repeating "stand here and look at me," during their Denver Family Photos, our session looked a lot more like this:
Racing down the hidden alleyways.
Playing "I Spy" to spot hidden details in the massive murals.
Sharing genuine, belly-laughing family hugs when the boys finally tuckered themselves out.
By focusing on a lifestyle and candid approach we captured the brothers' actual dynamic, the high energy, the quiet side-by-eye smirks, and the chaotic joy of this exact chapter in their lives.
No fake smiles required!
My Philosophy: The best photos happen when you forget you're on a photoshoot. When we let go of perfection, we make room for the actual magic.
Make a Day of It: Things to Do in Denver's RiNo District
One of my favorite things about booking a session in this part of town is that it easily doubles as a family day out. If you're looking for fun things to do in Denver before or after your photo session, RiNo has plenty of spots that keep the good vibes going:
Grab a Treat: Pop into Denver Central Market for some local ice cream or wood-fired pizza. It’s an easy way to reward the kids (and parents!) after a session.
Explore the Alleys: The best street art is tucked away in the alleyways between Larimer and Walnut Streets, specifically between 26th and 32nd. It’s entirely free and endlessly inspiring.
Support Local Art: Keep an eye out for tags and signatures on the walls—it’s a great way to introduce kids to the names of the local creatives shaping Denver’s culture.
